Children of Women: The Promise and Peril of J.D. Vance presented by David Storey, PhD – Jan. 8

Please join us for a presentation and discussion led by philosophy professor David Storey.

Vice President-elect J.D. Vance is not only the heir apparent to the MAGA movement. He is also the most prominent proponent of “post-liberalism,” a movement typically coded as “right on culture, left on economics”, a combination that scrambles typical categories and, as developmentalists, ought to rivet our attention.

In this presentation, David will outline the diverse and fascinating philosophical influences on Vance—including libertarian Peter Thiel (his former employer), neo-reactionary Curtis Yarvin, post-liberal Catholic Patrick Deneen, Rod Dreher (of “Benedict Option” fame), and national conservative James Orr (his “British Sherpa”). David will analyze how Vance channels Warrior, Traditional, and Modern worldviews, and explore whether and to what extent Vance enacts a kind of Progressive consciousness. Finally, David will consider the promise and peril of a future Vance America in relation to several issues: the global fertility crisis, which David calls the “climate change of the Right”; the politics of masculinity, and the future of Christianity in American political culture.

David Storey, PhD is a professor of philosophy at Boston College, where he teaches courses on the Great Books of Western Culture, climate change, emerging technologies, pilgrimage, and philosophy as a way of life. He is also an integral coach and a certified mediation teacher through the Mindfulness Institute for Emerging Adults.
